AN OPEN LETTER TO JOHN GRISHAM FROM A CHILD ABUSE SURVIVOR

AN OPEN LETTER TO JOHN GRISHAM FROM A CHILD ABUSE SURVIVOR

John Grisham, the novelist and lawyer, 59, believes many men have been wrongly sent to prison after watching child porn online and their sentences should be reduced.

Dear John Grisham,

You have lost another fan, and I am sure you have lost a lot of respect worldwide this week. You are a paedophile apologist and your sympathetic views in the Telegraph this week about people downloading child pornography are horrific and deluded! Just because your friend was convicted and you have an emotional connection it does not mean we should put children at risk. Again it begs the question if the children being used in the child porn were children you knew and loved (god forbid) would you have been so sympathetic towards your friend or any other viewers of child porn?

Those who watch and download child pornography are paedophiles too and they do harm children even if they have not touched them directly. One of the reasons watching and downloading child porn is considered a crime and with it comes a hefty sentence is because child porn has been proven to be a doorway to actual abuse. Pedophilia is such a horrific crime and the authorities would rather take measures to prevent any child being abused. A normal person even if they are intoxicated would not want to watch child porn.

You said that those who watch child porn have not harmed anybody and would never touch a child. Well Mr Grisham you are very deluded.

First all the idea of child porn in itself is horrific because those children in the materials are real children who are being molested, raped, tortured and forced to do unspeakable acts!

When the children are no longer useful for pornography they are forced into prostitution, slavery or murdered.

Those who watch child porn encourage and perpetuate abductions and sexual trafficking of children. Those who watch child porn are just as bad because they create a perverse need for sexual commercialisation of children.

Again I emphasize that normal person would not get thrills from watching child porn. If someone has a sexual attraction to children through material they are dangerous to children. If the opportunity presents itself they will molest or rape a child.

Those who watch any porn watch it for sexual gratification and those who watch child porn want sexual gratification based on attraction for children. Just like adult porn watchers, it is never just out of curiosity child porn viewers are wetting their appetite in the hope they will get a chance to abuse a child.

As a victim of child abuse I can testify that each and every person that abused me had an obsession with sex and or pornography. They were also attracted to or exhibiting predatory behaviour towards children or very young women. One of my abusers who was a high powered diplomat had a town house riddled with pornographic material which he did not even hide. He also had regular sexual encounters or made advances to his daughters teenage nannies who rarely stayed longer than a few months. He openly called the teenage nannies  that rejected him ‘sluts’ ‘bitches’ or ‘pigs’ because he hated anyone who rejected him. So yes, his obsession with pornography made him abuse minors. I also firmly believe that my mother’s obsession with porn and her hosting porn parties at our house is what encouraged my abuser to molest and rape me. My mother normalised porn and later child porn in our house which gave my abuser the confidence to cross those boundaries and abuse me. In that time I firmly believe I was drugged and photos were taken of me, and in fact he could still be in his possession of the photos or they could be circulating online. It therefore disgusts me highly to think that somewhere this pervert is still looking at pornographic photos of me when I was a child or if they were circulated they could be online somewhere with all these perverts getting a kick at my ordeal.

As I am writing this post I can see that you have apologised for your comments after an online backlash. However the damage has already been done. You have trivialized a horrific practice because your friend got incarcerated for it. The problem is not the way the justice system punishes viewers of child pornography the problem is that there are perverts and predators online wetting their appetite waiting for that moment when they can cross the boundaries and abuse a child. I applaud the USA criminal justice system and propose that any crime involving the harm of a child whether directly or indirectly should be punished severely to act as a deterrent. I bet your friend will think twice before he has a drunken stumble on his computer again to watch child porn.

John Grisham has given an astonishing interview to The Telegraph defending some child sex offenders, saying they have become victims of a legal system that has 'gone crazy'.

The 59-year-old then called for lighter sentences for those caught downloading images and videos of children being sexually abused.

'We have prisons now filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who've never harmed anybody, would never touch a child,' Grisham told The Telegraph.

'But they got online one night and started surfing around, probably had too much to drink or whatever, and pushed the wrong buttons, went too far and got into child porn.'

John Grisham says, said he feels so strongly about the issue because his friend was involved in a child porn sting about 10 years ago.

He said his 'old buddy from law school' became involved in an operation organized by the FBI in Canada.

'His drinking was out of control, and he went to a website,' Grisham told The Telegraph.

'It was labelled ''sixteen-year-old wannabee hookers'' or something like that.

'And it said ''16-year-old girls''. So he went there. Downloaded some stuff - it was 16-year-old girls who looked 30.

'He shouldn't have done it. It was stupid, but it wasn't 10-year-old boys.

'He didn't touch anything.

'And God, a week later there was a knock on the door: ''FBI!'' and it was sting set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to catch people - sex offenders - and he went to prison for three years.'

'There's so many of them now. There's so many ''sex offenders'' - that's what they're called - that they put them in the same prison.

'Like they're a bunch of perverts, or something.

'We've gone nuts with this incarceration.'

Grisham was sure to say that he has 'no sympathy for real pedophiles' and believes anyone caught committing such a crime should face harsh penalties.

However he believes many men have been penalized too harshly for doing too little.
